Soft Wash vs Pressure Wash: What's the Difference and Which Does Your Home Need?

If you've been researching exterior cleaning for your home in Brisbane, Logan or the Gold Coast, you've probably come across both terms — soft washing and pressure washing. They sound similar, and some operators use them interchangeably. But they're fundamentally different techniques used for very different surfaces and situations.

Using the wrong method on the wrong surface can cause thousands of dollars in damage. Here's everything you need to know before you book.

What is Pressure Washing?

Pressure washing uses high-pressure water to physically blast dirt, grime and contaminants off hard surfaces. The cleaning power comes entirely from water pressure — typically measured in PSI (pounds per square inch).

Best surfaces for pressure washing:

  • Concrete driveways and paths
  • Brick walls and paving
  • Pool surrounds and coping
  • Timber and aluminium fences
  • Commercial car parks and loading docks
  • Industrial surfaces

Pressure washing is highly effective on hard, durable surfaces that can withstand significant water force. It removes embedded oil stains, heavy grime and surface discolouration quickly and efficiently.

What is Soft Washing?

Soft washing uses low pressure — similar in force to a garden hose — combined with professional cleaning solutions to remove biological growth and surface contaminants. The cleaning power comes from chemistry, not pressure.

Best surfaces for soft washing:

  • Roof tiles — terracotta, concrete, slate
  • Colourbond and metal roofing
  • House exteriors — render, weatherboard, fibre cement, brick
  • Eaves and fascias
  • Solar panels
  • Any painted surface

Why Soft Washing is Safer for Roofs and House Exteriors

This is the critical part. Using high-pressure washing on a roof or rendered house exterior is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes in the exterior cleaning industry.

Here's what high pressure can do to the wrong surface:

  • Crack or dislodge roof tiles
  • Force water under roof membranes causing internal leaks
  • Strip render and texture from walls
  • Void manufacturer warranties on roofing materials
  • Damage mortar between bricks
  • Remove protective coatings from painted surfaces

Soft washing eliminates these risks entirely. The professional-grade cleaning solutions kill lichen, moss and algae at the root system — meaning results last 2 to 3 years rather than the few months you get from simply blasting the surface with high pressure.

The Key Difference — Killing vs Blasting

Think of it this way: pressure washing physically removes surface-level dirt and grime. It works brilliantly on concrete and hard surfaces where the goal is mechanical cleaning.

Soft washing chemically treats and kills biological growth at the source. On organic material like lichen and moss, simply blasting with high-pressure water leaves the root system intact beneath the surface — growth returns within weeks. Soft washing kills it properly and prevents rapid regrowth.

What About House Exteriors?

For house washing, soft washing is almost always the correct choice. Modern home exteriors — particularly rendered, painted or fibre cement surfaces — can be easily and permanently damaged by high pressure.

Our house soft wash service uses:

  • Low-pressure application safe for all surface types
  • Professional-grade cleaning solutions applied with care
  • Thorough rinse to protect garden beds and surrounding surfaces
  • Coverage of all elevations including eaves, fascias and window surrounds

The result is a clean, bright exterior that often looks freshly painted — without the cost or risk of surface damage.

When You Need Both Methods

Many of our residential jobs across Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast combine both methods in a single visit. Soft wash for the roof, house exterior, eaves and fascias. Pressure wash for the driveway, paths, pool surrounds and concrete areas.

This complete exterior clean in one visit is often more cost-effective than booking separate jobs — and gives your entire property a consistent, freshly cleaned result.
